Google Never Sleeps With Caffeine

Google Caffeine

Google Caffeine

One thing about the search engines that seems certain is that things are always changing.  You just had to know that after the partnership between Yahoo and Bing, Google would be making a change soon too.  That change will be Google Caffeine.

Google Caffeine will be used as Google’s newly revamped search engine that promises to increase the speed, precision, the scope and comprehensiveness of their search.  While Google has not let us know exactly how they are changing their search algorithm, we can gather that the search results are going to show up faster, and in a somewhat different order.  The average internet user may not notice the difference, but people in the industry or that do a lot of searches should appreciate the difference.

Give it a test run for yourself.  Open up two two screens, one with Caffeine, one with the current form of Google.  Do a search for the same term in both forms of the engine.  What I have noticed so far is slightly different search results, often times more occurrences, and a load time that is almost twice as fast.

Google has this to say about requesting feedback on the new Caffeine-

Right now, we only want feedback on the differences between Google’s current search results and our new system. We’re also interested in higher-level feedback (”These types of sites seem to rank better or worse in the new system”) in addition to “This specific site should or shouldn’t rank for this query.” Engineers will be reading the feedback, but we won’t have the cycles to send replies.

Here’s how to give us feedback: Do a search at http://www2.sandbox.google.com and look on the search results page for a link at the bottom of the page that says “Dissatisfied? Help us improve.” Click on that link, type your feedback in the text box and then include the word caffeine somewhere in the text box.

You can give the new Google Caffeine a test run yourself with their developer preview.   There is still going to be some changes and tweaks to Caffeine so it is not quite in its finished form, you can get a feel for how it works, how the search results are slightly different, and you can see if you notice the fraction of a second quicker that it loads.

My conclusion of the changes:
1)    The new Caffeine is really fast, results appear in about twice as fast as before.
2)    The new search engine will rely on keyword strings  and page load time to a higher degree than before.
3)    Search will have more accurate real time results in an effort to match Facebook and Twitter’s real time search engines.

The new Google Caffeine is an improvement and will be the best search engine to date in my opinion.  This will result in more accurate results and faster load times.

  • Jeff, what does more occurrences mean?

  • I am curious to know how my web pages will fare with Caffeine, but as with any other changes that Google make to their algorithms, the only thing I can do is to wait and optimise again if I need to.

  • Hi Paula,
Occurrences are how many other pages are out there on the same topic. To see for yourself, do a search in Google and in the upper right it will say how many results there are. Results can be used interchangeably with occurrences.
